Will my Insurance Cover
Massage or Bodywork Services?

If you are in a car accident or have a job-related injury covered by workman's compensation, insurance may cover massage or bodywork when prescribed by a physician. If your insurance covers chiropractic or osteopathic services, the services of a massage/bodywork practitioner may be covered when prescribed by a chiropractor or osteopath. Massage or bodywork provided as part of the prescribed treatment by a physician or registered physical therapist is often covered. The best thing to do is check with your insurance company to see exactly what is covered under what circumstances.

An increasing number of insurance companies and managed-care organizations are covering complementary and alternative medicine, fueled by consumer demand and a growing body of scientific evidence demonstrating the benefits and cost-effectiveness.

A recent survey of 18 major HMOs and insurance providers, including Aetna, Medicare, Prudential, and Kaiser Permanente, found that 14 of them covered at least 11 of 34 alternative therapies.

The evaluations done by emergency room doctors are only meant to ensure you don't suffer from any serious, immediate injuries like broken bones, abrasions, cuts, or concussions. They are not looking for muscle tissue injuries or misaligned bones.

The whiplash injury to the neck, or cervical sprain/strain, is by far the most common injury that results from a car accident.  Sprains and strains are referred to as soft tissue injuries (soft tissue includes muscles, tendons, and ligaments) and occur when the head is abruptly jerked back and forth, muscles and ligaments can be injured.

The ligaments, discs, and muscles that support the spine can be torn and injured in automobile accidents.
The nervous system encased by the spinal bones of the neck and back can become stretched and irritated. Current medical research explains that while the occupants in a vehicle may have significant injury, there may be little damage to the vehicle.

The damage to the spine and surrounding soft tissues can result in symptoms including; blurry vision, hearing problems, dizziness, pain and tingling in the arms and hands, headache, decreased ability to turn the neck, and low back problems.

Soft tissue injuries, invisible on x-rays and often overlooked, can cause severe debilitating pain after a car accident.

Worse yet, if a soft tissue injury is not directly addressed with soft tissue therapy such as medical massage, and left untreated and unresolved, the injured muscles and other soft tissues can end up causing chronic pain for months, years—even decades after the accident.

Unfortunately, the standard healthcare approach to these injuries often amounts to nothing more than suppressing the symptoms with pain-killers and potentially dangerous anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), leaving the injured muscles to hopefully heal on their own.

The body's greatest need is for the head to remain firmly attached to the neck and torso. The body will accept long-term problems to have a chance to keep the head attached. The problem is, rapid movement of the neck can cause fibers to tear or rip. Some tears can be big enough to let you know about them instantly, others are very small. The result is muscle spasm, which many doctors do not know how to relax, so they give drugs, want to cut, or say "live with the pain".
